Linear vs Non-Linear
In escape room design, "linear" and "non-linear" describe how puzzles are structured. A linear room requires players to solve puzzles in a specific order — each solution unlocks the next step in a single chain. A non-linear room allows multiple puzzles to be worked on simultaneously, letting team members split up and tackle different challenges at once before converging on a final objective. Non-linear rooms tend to be better for larger groups since everyone can contribute at the same time, while linear rooms create a shared narrative arc. Many modern escape rooms blend both styles, with some phases being linear and others opening up for parallel solving.
